Amazon Product Video Requirements: the AI avatar tag, and the 10-day lead time
Everything on this page comes from Amazon's Shoppable video guide, read on 28 October 2026. Amazon publishes the whole specification, including the one AI condition most video tools never mention: a generated presenter turns the video file itself into a metadata problem.
Can I use AI-generated video in an Amazon listing?
Yes, and Amazon publishes the specification. MOV or MP4, up to 1080p, 5 GB, 1 to 12 minutes, at 16:9 horizontal or 9:16 vertical. The one AI condition is the same as for images: if the video contains a photorealistic AI-generated person — an avatar presenter, for instance — the file must carry the keyword contains-synthetic-performer in its XMP dc:subject field before upload.
- Format MOV or MP4, up to 1080p, maximum 5 GB, duration 1 to 12 minutes.
- 16:9 horizontal or 9:16 vertical. Thumbnail JPEG, PNG, GIF or BMP under 5 MB; 1920 x 1080 at 16:9 is the recommended size.
- Photorealistic AI-generated person on screen: tag the video file with contains-synthetic-performer in XMP dc:subject — the same keyword Amazon uses for images.
- AI voiceover over real footage, or generated scenery with no people: no tag required.
- Not allowed: external links or URLs, promotional calls to action, unauthorised music or artwork, visible third-party branding, misleading claims.
- Review takes 1 to 7 business days, then up to 3 more days to publish. Plan ten days, not two.
Every claim above is on this page with its source and the date it was read. The rest of the page is the evidence.
The specification, as published
| Requirement | Official value | What happens if you miss it |
|---|---|---|
| File format | MOV or MP4 | Upload fails |
| Maximum size | 5 GB | Upload fails |
| Resolution | Up to 1080p | Rejected, or published at lower quality |
| Aspect ratio | 16:9 horizontal or 9:16 vertical | Rejected |
| Duration | 1 to 12 minutes | Rejected |
| Thumbnail format | JPEG, PNG, GIF or BMP | Upload fails |
| Thumbnail size | Under 5 MB (1920 x 1080 at 16:9 recommended) | Upload fails |
| Account age | Active for more than three months | Upload not available |
| ASIN link | Every video must be associated with at least one ASIN | Video never appears on a listing |
| AI-generated people | Tag the file with contains-synthetic-performer in XMP dc:subject | No disclosure shown where the law requires one |
The AI condition is identical to the image rule
Amazon uses the same mechanism for video as for images: a photorealistic AI-generated person must be declared by writing the keyword contains-synthetic-performer into the dc:subject field of the file's XMP metadata, using an IPTC-compatible editor. Amazon then adds a disclosure to the video where the law requires one.
The exclusions are the same list as well. Real people need no tag, even when altered with AI tools. Characters from films or games need no tag. Videos with no people need no tag, and neither do people who are not photorealistic.
This is the part that matters for anyone generating video rather than filming it. A talking-avatar tool produces exactly the case the rule is written about. The output is not just a video file — it is a video file plus a metadata field, and the tool is not going to add that field for you.
What gets a video rejected
- External website links or URLs anywhere in the video.
- Promotional calls to action, or promotional content of any kind.
- Unauthorised music, artwork, or any audiovisual work you do not have permission to use.
- Visible third-party branding, or external branding of any kind.
- Misleading claims or incorrect product information.
- Blurry or low-quality footage, or a poor-quality thumbnail.
The timing nobody plans for
Amazon's own figures: initial review takes 1 to 7 business days, and publication to the detail page happens within three days after approval. That is up to ten business days between upload and a live video, and Amazon notes the timelines can run longer before and during holiday shopping seasons.
For a seller launching a product on a fixed date this is the constraint that decides the schedule, not the editing. A generated video does not shorten the review queue — the queue is the queue regardless of how the file was produced.
The softlines trap
On softlines products, a listing with six or more images suppresses the video in the desktop view. Amazon's own troubleshooting section lists removing excess images as the fix. Amazon elsewhere recommends six additional images plus one video, so on softlines those two pieces of guidance pull in opposite directions and the video is what loses.
This is the kind of rule that is invisible until someone asks why the video is not showing. It is not a rejection and nothing in the dashboard says the video is being suppressed.
What this means if the video was generated
Three of the rejection triggers above are ordinary editorial mistakes that AI generation makes more likely rather than less: promotional calls to action written into a script, a brand logo left in frame from a reference image, and music lifted from the model's training output without a licence.
The fourth is specific to generation. A synthetic presenter is a photorealistic AI-generated person, so the file needs the tag before upload. A generated voiceover over footage of the real product does not. Generated scenery with no people in it does not.
The practical rule: decide whether a synthetic person appears on screen, and if one does, treat the metadata step as part of the export — not as something to fix after Amazon reviews it.
Frequently asked
Does Amazon require disclosure for AI-generated video?
Only when the video contains a photorealistic AI-generated person, such as an avatar presenter. The file then needs contains-synthetic-performer in its XMP dc:subject field, the same keyword Amazon requires on images. Real people, even ones altered with AI, and videos with no people need no tag.
What are Amazon's video format requirements?
MOV or MP4, up to 1080p, a maximum of 5 GB, and 1 to 12 minutes long, at 16:9 horizontal or 9:16 vertical. The thumbnail must be JPEG, PNG, GIF or BMP under 5 MB.
How long does Amazon take to approve a video?
Initial review is 1 to 7 business days, and publication follows within three days of approval. Plan on ten days between upload and a live video, and longer before and during holiday periods.
Why is my Amazon video not showing on the listing?
Two documented causes. The video has been in Published status for fewer than three days, or — on softlines products — the listing has six or more images, which suppresses the video in the desktop view.
Do I need to be brand registered to upload video to Amazon?
No. The account must have been active for more than three months, and that requirement applies to brand-registered and non-brand-registered sellers alike. Each video also has to be associated with at least one ASIN.
