People leave Synthesia on three triggers: the credit maths once they need many minutes, the avatar library not containing anyone who looks like their audience, or a procurement question about where the video is rendered.
Decide first whether you need a stock avatar or a custom one. That single answer removes most of the list below, because custom-avatar tools price differently and approve differently.
Side by side
| Tool | Pricing | Best for | Platforms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Descript | Freemium | A podcast or course producer who would rather edit text than scrub a timeline. | macOS, Windows, Web |
| ElevenLabs | Freemium | A video or audiobook producer who needs narration in several languages without booking voice actors. | Web, API |
| Runway | Freemium | A motion designer producing concept shots and short inserts for pitches rather than finished broadcast work. | Web |
The options, and what each one costs you
- Better if
- A podcast or course producer who would rather edit text than scrub a timeline.
- You give up
- Accuracy varies with audio quality, and the project format is not portable to other editors.
- Better if
- A video or audiobook producer who needs narration in several languages without booking voice actors.
- You give up
- Cloned voices require consent verification, and the legal ground around voice cloning is still unsettled.
- Better if
- A motion designer producing concept shots and short inserts for pitches rather than finished broadcast work.
- You give up
- Everything runs on credits that vanish fast at usable resolutions, and output still needs a cleanup pass in a real editor before it goes anywhere near a client.
Frequently asked
What is the best alternative to Synthesia?
It depends on what you are leaving for. Decide first whether you need a stock avatar or a custom one. That single answer removes most of the list below, because custom-avatar tools price differently and approve differently. Our closest match on features and price is Descript.
Is there a free alternative to Synthesia?
Descript is free to start. ElevenLabs is free to start. Runway is free to start.
How much does switching from Synthesia cost?
Migration is usually the expensive part, not the licence: exports rarely preserve permissions, history or automations. Budget a day per active workspace for anything with a database in it.
